🖼 How to sell artwork
Art photography is about eliminating everything that isn't the work: hang the piece flat on a plain wall, shoot straight-on, and use diffused daylight so glass and varnish don't reflect. Include a scale reference and a signature close-up — provenance details sell art.
📷 Photographing
- 🎨 Hang flat against a plain wall — no shadows from the frame
- 💡 Diffused natural light; avoid windows reflecting in the glass
- 📐 Full piece straight-on, signature close-up, verso (back), and frame corners
- 📏 Include a ruler or credit card in one shot to establish scale
- 🔍 Close-up on any canvas cracks, paint chips, or conservation work
📦 Packing & shipping
- 🗂️ Prints/flat art: cardboard sandwich (2–3 layers each side) + acid-free backing + poly sleeve
- 🖼️ Framed work: wrap glass in kraft paper first, then bubble wrap the entire piece, then box it
- 📦 Use a custom-cut box or telescoping art box — leaves room for 3" of packing on all sides
- 🏷️ "Fragile", "Do Not Bend", and "This Side Up" on the outer box; insure everything over $50
